Corruption: The main bane of our economy
Many of us never stop to think of the alarming effects of corruption on the individual and the society as a whole. The canker-worm of corruption has actually eaten deep into the fabric of our society. The effects of corruption has over the years hitherto retarded our development as a nation and tainted our image/reputation both locally and before the international community.
The subsets of corruption include:
- Bribery,
- Theft,
- Funds misappropriation,
- Embezzlement,
- Advance fee fraud (419),
- Inflation of contract sums,
- Inclusion of the names of ghost workers on payment vouchers,
- Tribalism, and so on.
You may not be personally involved in any of the aforementioned corrupt practices but are you tolerating them?
You may not give bribe but do you think it is proper to take bribe in the name of ‘gifts’ or ‘appreciation’ (The ‘returns’ or ‘kola’ syndrome)?
I put it to you today that it isn’t right. You need to change your ways and attitude today for a better Benue State, and our country Nigeria.
Our fight against corruption and our collective desire to take our rightful position in the League of Nations must start within each individual. Change indeed begins with you and me.
Be the change you want to see in others.
Be determined beyond mere words to turn over a new leaf and change for real.
Where there is a will, there is a way.
Yes, We can.
